Economic development, and the positive impact a construction project can have on the community
April 16th, 2021
(Fremont, NH) Economic development through construction and land development is essential to a community’s long term success. Economic development generates economic stability, not just for current residents, but for future ones as well. Construction projects can have a hugely positive impact on your community and plays a significant role in generating more jobs and creating curb appeal to communities. Newly created jobs attract new residents and businesses to contribute to the local economy, which not only has a positive financial impact, but also plays a role in uniting a community. Construction and economic development go hand in hand and are key contributors to increasing home values, boosting local business and economy, and providing benefits to the community far beyond the duration of any construction project itself.
Jewett Construction is currently involved with a project that serves as an example of the benefits associated with economic development through progressive construction activity. Scarborough Downs, a thoroughbred racetrack in southern Maine constructed in 1949 had struggled for years to turn a profit, changing ownership a handful of times, and drawing little to no interest from the community. Approximately 3 years ago the land was bought by a developer with a vision to create a Live, Work, Play community on the surrounding land. The transformation of the Scarborough Downs Race Track has been instrumental in reinvigorating the town and making Scarborough one of the most sought after places to live in Southern Maine. Jewett is incredibly proud to be a part of the Scarborough Downs project; we are currently under construction on two 18,000 square feet buildings in the community’s Innovation District and we look forward to partnering with Boulos on future developments in Maine.
Today, “The Downs” as it is now known, has begun its second phase of a $621 million redevelopment. Nearly 140 housing units have already been built and sold, with approximately 180 more planned to be built. Additionally, the new light industrial park has the potential to provide 3,000 new jobs. A recreation center and shopping district for the town are also planned to be constructed. Within 20 years, The Downs development will provide the town with a significant increase in property and excess taxes, which will allow for spending additional public services to residents and businesses in the community. This development is just one example of the impact construction and economic development play within a community.
Jewett Construction is proud to be contributing to the growth and success of Scarborough through our work at The Downs. We look forward to seeing Scarborough continue to blossom into one of the most sought-after communities in Southern Maine.
