5 Reasons Why Girls and Women Should Consider a Career in Construction

(Raymond, NH) – The first week in March marks Women in Construction (WIC) Week, a weeklong celebration of women in the construction industry. WIC Week is supported by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) to raise awareness about all of the possibilities available to women in the industry. The week is also set aside to highlight women's growing role in construction.

In honor of WIC Week, here are five reasons why girls and women should consider a career in the construction industry:

1. The pay gap is smaller.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women in the construction industry earn on average 99.1% of what men make. This is considerably better than the overall average of just 81.1%.

2. The job opportunities are everywhere.

The construction industry is one of the few sectors where the demand for new workers has risen. Unfilled jobs in the construction sector reached an all-time high last year. Construction needs and jobs are growing steadily, and if you are looking to enter a new industry with untapped potential, construction could be your answer. Career paths can take so many different directions, from working in the field to project management to business development and so much more.

3. Women are natural problem solvers.

Do you love a challenge? Then a career in construction would be perfect for you. Whether you’re in the field or meeting with other project stakeholders, careers in construction are very active and involve engaging in conversations to solve problems.

4. You’ll have the satisfaction of saying, “I helped make that happen.”

You'll have a hand in building futures and changing lives by revitalizing and adding to the communities around you, no matter what your job title is. That is an amazing sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that you can bring home with you every day.

5. You can use some of the most advanced technologies in the world.

If you think construction is all blueprints, hammers and nails, you are mistaken! The manual construction tools and processes of yesterday are very different from the highly technical applications and devices that are found on our job sites today.

At Jewett Construction we are committed to bringing more women into our field and we are actively working to recruit more women into positions at all levels of our company every year.
