Celebrating 50 Years of Growth, Resilience, and Generational Leadership

FREMONT, N.H. – During its 50 years of operation, Jewett Construction has not only endured but thrived through economic challenges including the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. Honored as one of New Hampshire’s Top Family-Owned Businesses, Jewett Construction recently landed the cover story of Business NH Magazine’s prestigious issue recognizing the state’s leading family enterprises.

The company’s origin is rooted in resilience. Founded in 1972 by Ed and Arlene Jewett after Ed lost his job due to a factory fire in Fremont, Jewett Construction began as a small residential building operation in Raymond, NH. Armed with only a truck and a few tools, Ed built a legacy that now spans three generations.

Craig Jewett, Ed’s son, has led the company since 2004. “I was afforded an opportunity that’s pretty special,” Craig reflects. But leadership wasn’t handed to him—Craig started as a laborer, a tradition of meritocracy that continued with his own son, Nick, now an estimator at the company. This commitment to integrity and hard work has defined the company culture across generations.

Facing a recession not long after taking over, Craig strategically focused on developing a niche in automotive dealership construction, which helped the company grow steadily. At the time, Jewett was generating $10–12 million annually. Since then, revenue has increased seven-fold and the company now employs 65 team members.

Jewett Construction has expanded well beyond its original niche, serving clients in industrial, manufacturing, cannabis, nonprofit, and multi-family residential sectors. Relationship-building has been key: “85% of our business is repeat clients,” says Nick Jewett. “Making dreams become reality for clients is pretty inspiring.”

The company's momentum didn’t slow during the pandemic. In fact, Jewett saw an 80% increase in revenue between 2020 and 2021. “We never laid a person off—we actually hired some great people and grew our client base,” Craig noted.

Outgrowing their corporate headquarters in Raymond, the company built and moved into a new, modern facility in Fremont—on the very site where Ed Jewett’s original employer once stood. The new headquarters also houses Jewett’s architectural studio, which includes five in-house architects, enabling faster project turnarounds and expanding design-build capabilities. “It’s setting us up for the future and allowing us to get to market swifter,” Craig explains.

About Jewett Construction: Jewett Construction is a family-owned construction management company with a 50-year history in New England. Jewett specializes in commercial construction projects in the office, manufacturing, retail, and automotive sectors.
