Women in Construction

(Raymond, NH) Growing up in New Hampshire and studying civil engineering at the University of New Hampshire, Emily never initially envisioned a career in construction. However, she soon realized that working in the field would give her a greater understanding of how the designs she created came together in real-world applications. “I thought it was important to gain experience in construction to make me a better engineer,” she shared.

Since joining Jewett Construction, Emily has discovered a workplace that offers both professional development and a supportive culture. “I enjoy working at Jewett Construction because it is a small, family-owned company, and as a result, we have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects,” she remarked. “I have only been out of college for eight months and have already worked on grocery store remodels, car dealerships, site modifications, retail buildings, a timberframe barn, and mechanically intensive projects.”

She emphasized the value of Jewett’s tight-knit culture, saying, “I enjoy the family-like atmosphere of a smaller company where everyone is friendly and willing to help, but will also push me to succeed and grow.”

Even in the short time Emily has been with Jewett Construction, she has witnessed the company grow and evolve. “We have a talented team with a variety of backgrounds—some with many years of construction experience and others fresh out of school,” she said. “With our diverse specialties, I’m excited to see what new projects we will have the opportunity to work on in the coming years and throughout New England.”

Reflecting on her own career path, Emily noted that she never imagined herself in the construction industry while in high school or even in college. Now, she encourages others to consider the field: “Construction is fast-paced and changes every day. In my short time in the industry, I’ve enhanced my problem-solving, customer-service, organization, and time-management skills. It is hard work, but I really enjoy it!”
